Sociology, M.A.

Saint Louis University’s Master of Arts in sociology will prepare you for a managerial and policy position such as a program evaluator, researcher, program director or policy maker.


About the Program

As an M.A. student in sociology at SLU, you can choose to specialize in urban social policy, health and the environment, law and society, or spatial demography. The specializations are a unique blend of theoretical and research that will allow you to analyze social issues, evaluate solutions and improve the quality of community life.

Program Highlights

SLU’s M.A. in sociology program will train you to identify and document insights into social processes and structures. Courses are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty that maximizes the richness of concepts and methodologies of social sciences. It provides a strong foundation for analyzing the issues of justice, administration and policy.

Curriculum and Program Details

You will need to complete 33 credit hours of graduate study for SLU’s sociology M.A. You’ll choose between a thesis (six credit hours) or a non-thesis track with a comprehensive exam. The credit hour requirements are: 12 hours of core coursework, six hours of practical coursework, and nine hours of electives (or 15 hours of electives, if you choose the non-thesis track). You will need to complete all coursework within five years of being admitted.

After graduating with a master’s degree in sociology from SLU, you might pursue a career as a market research analyst, nonprofit administrator or a policy analyst. The Bureau of Labor listed the 2014 median annual salary for market research analysts as $61,290, and employment of market research analysts is projected to increase by 19 percent by 2024.

Research and teaching assistantships are available to students who qualify. These awards are based on merit and include a stipend, tuition scholarship and health insurance. 

Applicant Criteria

Successful applicants possess 3.0 or higher GPA, sufficient GRE scores and sufficient TOEFL scores (for international applicants).
